The English title March Comes In Like a Lion is written on the cover of the manga. Although Umino had not seen the 1992 film March Comes In similar a Lion [ja] , the movie poster and the championship of the movie left an impression on her: "A girl with a black haircut is holding a half-eaten ice foam in her oral cavity." This phrase is from the British weather maxim "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."[ix] In addition, the supervisor, Manabu Senzaki, commented that the shogi rankings begin in June, and the final game for promotion and demotion is held in March, and then the professionals go lions in March.[10] Umino stated that the manga is "a story based on researching and hearing diverse stories about worlds [she] didn't know" whereas her previous piece of work, Honey and Clover is "a story about a globe [she] already knew without having to extend [herself]."[eleven] She chose to write something different from her previous work for if it was a failure, people would remember she moved to another field also hastily rather than call her a "one-hit wonder".[12] : nine

Umino said that she wanted the manga to be adapted by Shaft under Akiyuki Shinbo's management and if it was not possible then the manga "did not need to be adapted."[12] : 3 She doubted if they would take to adjust the manga as unlike adapting a light novel (like Monogatari) or making an original anime (such as Madoka Magica), they would not have much freedom.[12] : 5 She thinks that Shinbo commonly shows a shut up view of the characters rather than showing them from a distance which is a reason she stated for why she wanted him as the director.[12] : x Shinbo said that he wanted to make each of the three settings – Rei'southward room, the Kawamoto business firm and the shogi hall – distinct so equally to make the world into a sort of triangle.[12] : 13 He also visited Tsukishima to see the Kawamoto house area and a span used in the manga.[12] : 12

In 2009, the series was nominated for the 2d Annual Manga Taishō,[52] and information technology won this award in 2011.[53] Also in 2011 it won the Kodansha Manga Award in the general category (shared with Chūya Koyama's Space Brothers).[54] In 2014, it won the Thousand Prize of the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.[55] In 2021, the manga won the manga division'southward Grand Prize of the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival.[56] On Kadokawa Media Manufacturing plant's Da Vinci magazine "Book of the Twelvemonth" list, March Comes In similar a Lion topped the list for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017, ranked 4th in 2019 and 8th in 2020.[57] [58] In top manga for male readers category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, information technology ranked 5th and tied for seventh(with Drifters) in 2012 and 2017 respectively.[59] [60] The anime was listed as one of the top 25 anime of 2010s by Anime Feminist.[61] The second season was placed equally "runner-up" in IGN's "best anime series of 2018" list.[62]

Marion Bea of Anime Feminist praised the exploration of the characters' lives and struggles. She as well praised the portrayal of the characters' psychology and the depiction of others' support in solving one's issues.[63] Both seasons of the anime adaption was given 4 stars out of five by Allen Moody of THEM Anime Reviews. He liked how Kyoko is shown to have a vulnerable side under her external cruelty and how the Kawamoto sisters are portrayed when Hinata is being bullied although he did not find the sisters very interesting earlier. He disliked Kyoko's out-of-character comical presentation in Gotou's apartment and her absence from the story taking place during the second season. He constitute the story relatable to his life.[64] [65] Chris Beveridge of The Fandom Post also praised the portrayal of the characters and their lives.[66] He liked Nikkaido'south backstory and his connection with Shimada.[67] But he found a function of the story a bit also long that deals with shogi and the other players.[68]

Bea commended the utilize of surrounding environment in portraying the characters' emotional state, for example showing them struggling to go on swimming or surrounding them with snowfall.[63] Moody criticized the utilise of humor particularly where, according to him, the characters "launch into an uncontrolled rant". He constitute the artwork pretentious, he particularly disliked how the Kawamoto sisters are given a "cartoonish" expect in contrast with other characters in the anime adaption. He also criticized the repeated utilise of water to describe the character'southward emotional state and of slow-motility head turns.[64] [65] After watching the first episode, Amelia Melt of Anime Feminist found the art direction unconventional. But unlike Moody, she liked the art-fashion and praised the transition from the expression of Rei's depression to the presentation of humor maxim that it was skillfully done.[69] Beveridge gave the anime an audio grade of "B+" proverb that it would non attract a lot of attending. He gave the video an "A" praising how Shaft presented the details, animation quality and colour design in the serial.[66]
